Blood Glucose Monitoring

There are a couple of different ways which one can actually monitor their blood glucose level, unfortunately there is only one that can be done virtually anywhere. This form of blood glucose monitoring is done through sampling in which a person will prick their finger to allow blood to escape and that blood is analysed using a small strip.

You can also monitor the glucose levels through the use of clot tubes. This blood is then run through a centrifuge to separate the parts of the blood to give the lab access to checking the glucose levels of a person. However for the average diabetic this is not a plausible scenario seeing as though the monitoring of the glucose levels have to be done on a consistent basis.

The meters one uses will use one of a few possible techniques for measuring the actual glucose levels. Some of the older units will use what is known as reducing in which the blood is exposed to a chemical causing it to reduce and change colours depending on the levels. However for those suffering from uraemia, the measurements will be off. Most of the latest ways of measuring one's blood glucose levels is through the blood's enzymes. The first monitors relied on a colour chart however this was hard to read and sometimes the results were less then accurate. The newest monitors will actually do the math for you and determine your blood glucose levels in an easy to read numerical format.

Suffering from diabetes is no fun task for anyone who has to deal with it. When the blood glucose level drops too low, which is also known as hypoglycaemia, this can actually be a fatal condition. It results in lethargic behaviours as well as impaired functionality of a person's mental capacity, loss of consciousness as well as the person just being irritable. Hypoglycaemia can also lead to brain damage just to name a few possible and very serious side effects of the condition.
When the levels are too high, which is known as hyperglycaemia, one's appetite can become suppressed and over the long term can cause issues with the kidneys, eyes and even the body's nerves.

While the side effects of the high blood glucose levels are very dangerous, it is the low levels which cause the most harm and is most commonly associated with diabetes. When the blood glucose levels fall, they have to be remedied as quickly as possible. The reason for this is that in no time one can quickly become confused or unsteady. However it is when these low levels are maintained for lengthy times that the real damage can occur.

For anyone who is having issues with their blood glucose level or even think they may have some symptoms of the conditions, speak to a doctor as soon as possible because it can mean the difference of life and death. Furthermore for those suffering from diabetes and low or even high blood glucose levels, constant monitoring of those levels is an absolute must.
