It would not be until the late 1950’s when Bristol-Myers Squibb released the first modern day electric toothbrush which was aptly named the Broxodent. However, the first electric toothbrushes were designed specifically for those who had medical handicaps in which their motor skills were impaired. Furthermore, it was also growing in popularity as a recommendation by orthodontists for their patients who had braces for teeth straightening.

As time went on, much advancement in technology gave way to the ability to produce disposable heads at relatively affordable costs. As these costs continued to fall, the popularity of the electric toothbrush grew. It is important to note that in these earlier times, it was shown in many studies that the oscillating toothbrush did not actually offer better brushing then manual toothbrushes, but it was still a preferred way for many people who had motor skill difficulties.
